Donegal Deaf Club Christmas Party 04-12-2010

Picture
Donegal Deaf Club has a fantastic time in their annual Christmas Party in the Radisson Hotel. There was a total of 19 people attending the party with 15 of our members. We had a gorgeous 4 course meal with free raffle and a reindeer rodeo alongside it! Most of us were also staying in the hotel which offered very cheap deals on B&B. The decor and the service was exquisite. We danced the night away til about 4am in the morning before finally hitting the hay. Great night :)

Gambian Cultural Night - 20/06/2009

Picture
Alvean Jones made a weekend visit to Donegal with her two friends from the Gambia, Fatou + Ansu. Fatou and Ansu came over to Ireland for a month, hoping to explore as much of the island as possible and meet many Deaf people in the process. Donegal was one of their stops. We started the club earlier than usual (5pm) as we had a long night ahead of us. On the agenda was presentations, a video viewing, a display of traditional Gambian dance, a traditional Gambian food tasting session and an auction of clothes and jewellery to raise money for The Gambia. Caroline met Alvean + her two friends at 1.30pm where they had already got stuck into the cooking! There was beef, salmon, peanut butter, potatoes and loads of vegetables! Finally the food was all prepared and they made their way to the club.

Alvean gave a short talk about her experience in the Gambia and introduced our two special guests. Ansu, talked about the youth commuinity in The Gambia while Fatou talked about Gambian Deaf women. They gave beautiful speeches and a lot of our members were shocked at how Deaf people are treated in TheGambia. After that, Ansu lightened up the mood by dressing in traditional clothes and showing us a dance. He got all the club involved which made for some laughs! A video then about HIV was shown on the projector while Alvean and Ansu prepared the food for tasting. On offer was <insertnameoffoodhere>. The members were a bit apphresenive at first but soon got stuck in. The <riceinoil> was a huge hit as was the <beef>. After everyone had a bit of food in them, then came the auction! For sale was some football jerseys and some handmade clothing  + jewellery. The craft work on these items were absolutely stunning! By oh my, how Donegal people are generous! We raised over €500 for The Gambia with less than 20 people in the club! Huge success! Following that we had some tea and apple tart before we closed the night and headed to the pub!

Many thanks to Fatou and Ansu and of course Alvean for all their hard work! I hope they will remember their visit here!

Deaf Heritage Night 07-02-2009

Liam Breen came up to Donegal to give a presentation on Deaf Heritage in St.Joesph's. The presentation got underway just after half 7 and finished just after 10pm. He showed us some photographs of the antiques that were in the Heritage museum and explained to us what they were used for. We were amazed at the teaching charts that St.Joesph's had used for teaching children, absolutely amazing. Also the Deaf artists who are forgotten about. We had an interval with tea/coffee and delicious sandhwiches. At the end of the night, we had a raffle in which the first prize was a gift hamper donated by Oatfield Sweets!  We then moved to the Central Bar but felt it was a bit overcrowded so we proceeded to Josie's Bar where most of the group stayed til the end.

Many thanks once again to Liam Breen from all of us at the Donegal Deaf Club.

Christmas On Ice 02-01-2009

7up Christmas on Ice came to Letterkenny this year for the first time. So we decided to arrange a meet up so we could all enjoy it together! It was only opening for a month so we booked ourselves in for the 2nd January. 8 people went Ice Skating while a good few others were wary of going out on the ice in case they broke their leg or something (two of the committee included!) Everyone seemed to be ice-skating pretty well after a few falls and mishaps. One of our members however, got a bit cocky and decided to pretend fall, only a few seconds later, he fell for real and ended up with a cut on his eyelid from one of the blades. Had to bring him to hospital to get a stitch! That'll teach him not to show off!

Photos will be up ASAP. :)

Christmas Party 13-12-2009

Donegal Deaf Club had their Christmas Party in the Milford Inn before Christmas. The night kicked off at 7pm with all of us meeting in the bar, around 8.30pm we got our order taken and brought into the Dining Room to be seated. Food came very quickly which was a delight as we were all starving! Around 10.30pm, the lights dimmed, drum roll came on and Elvis came in! Well the tribute Elvis! Some of the other parties had blow up guitars and were rocking out to the band. The DJ came on around 1am and we danced til the small hours. Most of us were staying overnight in the hotel which was very handy! It meant we didn't have the bother to drive home or leave early!

Photos will be uploaded soon as possible. Keep checking out the site for details. :)

Deaforward Roadshow 10-05-2008

Deaforward Roadshow lands in Donegal!

Bernadette Costello and John Fennell travelled up to the Quality Hotel, Letterkenny in Donegal for the meeting which started at 7.30pm. There was a bit of a delay but we were under way at 8pm.  The meeting was extremely informative and lots of us were surprised at the Free Milk you could get if you have a medical card!! 14 people attended the meeting (not pictured is Caroline  and Noel) which was a bit disappointing but hopefully more people will attend the next one.

The meeting ended at about 10.30pm and then all of us including our guests headed to The Central Bar for a bit of craic! After a few pint, we decided to end in the night in style by going upstairs to the nightclub!  It was a great night had by all!! Donegal Deaf Club would like to say big thanks to Bernadette for all the roadshows she has presented to us the past years, hope she will come up to Donegal again and enjoy the craic with us again!

Don't forget to look at the photos of the night on the Gallery Page!
